   The Ville Platte Rotary Club today (Tuesday) heard from Evangeline Superintendent of Schools Toni Hamlin explain the new Common Core standards used in parish schools and throughout the state.

   Hamlin said 45 states have adopted common core standards and objectives in their curriculum. Along with the standards will come new national tests beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. She said there have been a lot of misinformation about common core from some groups who are opposed to  national standards.

   In other business, Rotary Club President Bill Brunet

-- reported that there will be a retirement party for Brenda Saucier from 5-8pm today at La Veille Banque. Saucier is retiring from Hancock Bank;

--announced that there will be a 100th year celebration for the Ville Platte Gazette April 10 from 4-6pm at the Ville Platte Civic Center;

--recognized Sacred Heart High student Emily Claire Soileau, the daughter of Joey and Kim Soileau, who has been named the Rotary Club District Student of the Year;

--received news that a mobile pantry will be distributing food to needy individuals every fourth Wednesday of the month from 11:30-1:30 at the Ville Platte Civic Center beginning tomorrow;  T here are no costs to the individual;

--heard from Mable Forman announce that the Viet Nam Veterans are sponsoring a gun raffle at $3 a ticket, and the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society is scheduled for April 3.

The Louisiana Swamp Pop Museum operated by the City of Ville Platte is open to the public every Friday and Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Come view the amazing artifacts, photos, records, Wall of Fame and hear the music. Admission charge is $3 adults, $2 seniors and $1 for children under 12. The museum is located on Northwest Railroad Avenue.
